GSPAA Select Tryouts For 2010-2011Information last posted at 7:30 AM on Monday June 7. ObjectiveThe purpose of the tryout process is to give every boy and girl with an interest in playing soccer at the Select level a fair opportunity to compete for selection to a travel team roster. The goal is to form boys and girls teams that seek a higher level of soccer learning and competition than the Club level provides. Coaching and training of the players and team focus on age appropriate skills development to offer a life long connection with the game. In support of the Select Program, each team participates in a regional (WAGS, NCSL, BBSL, CMSSL) or county (AAYSL) league that best fits the team development track. The number of teams formed for each side (boys and girls) will depend on the number of players trying out and availability of qualified coaches. We are always seeking qualified coaches to support our Select Soccer Program. If you are interested in coaching a select soccer team, please use the links on the web site to investigate opportunities. RegistrationAll tryout participants must be registered with GSPAA for the Select program. Fee adjustment or reimbursement will be made (credtited back to your credit card) if a player is not selected and chooses to play in the recreation league, declines an offer, or elects to play a different sport or with a different organization entirely. Registration is online and is open starting May 15th. Tryout participants should be registered by the end of May, but in the event that a player somehow misses this registration window, they may still tryout by arriving early and completing the online registration form at the Barn. The registration cost is $100 per season, plus the family fee of $75 if not yet previously met. For more information on the Select program, please see the Select Program link. LocationAll Tryouts will be held at Harvey Garcelon Sports Complex at Kinder Park. Use the Fields link for directions. The fields will be clearly marked. Tryout ScheduleGirls: June 7, 8, 9 (rain dates are June 10 and 11)
Boys: June 14, 15, 16 (rain dates are June 17 and 18)
Boys and Girls teams U15 and older: These teams conduct supplemental tryouts. Please contact the individual team for their schedule. Use the Boys or Girls Teams link under Select Program on the Soccer website. You must be registered with GSPAA before you may participate in official team activities. If you are being considered for a team AFTER registration is closed, you will need to make special arrangements to register in person. Your coach will assist you with this process. Date Ranges and Age Groups for 2010-2011*
* Every player must tryout in their natural age group Guidelines and Policies on Select team composition can be found at the Guidelines and Policies link under the Select Program tab. Evaluation ProcessOur objective is to provide an evaluation process that is fair and best reflects the game of soccer. Qualified staff coaches will act as independent evaluators and will assist the head coach in the selection process. It is imperative that all candidates try out at their age level, unless a specific exception has been granted by the GSPAA Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner prior to the tryout process. Attendance at all tryout sessions is highly recommended, as it will give the coaches the best opportunity to properly evaluate the candidate. GSPAA recognizes that due to illness, injury or conflicting activity (like a spring sport playoff game, for example) that a player may not be able to participate in all three sessions. But a player who misses sessions for other reasons does so at their own risk. Please inform the age group coach if you will be missing a session. Through a series of small-sided games, technical and tactical drills, and other skill-related activities, the coaches and evaluators will rate each player in the following categories:
Special InstructionsPlayers should arrive early for Sign-In and report to their age group's registration table at their specific field. There the player's registration status will be checked, and if they are properly registered, they will receive their tryout number placard to affix to their shorts. If they are not yet registered, they need to go to the Barn and register. The Barn is just off the access road on the way to the Upper field. The players will receive a packet of information with further details about each of the teams in that age group - the coaches, expectations of commitment, expected training, league and tournament schedules, and costs. Players should bring their own water and equipment. Any player with an injury, illness or special need must report this to a coach or independent evaluator before participating in the session. If a player sustains an injury during the tryouts or otherwise feels ill, the player should cease playing immediately and notify a coach or independent evaluator. It is important that parents refrain from coaching or assisting their child during the tryouts. We ask that parents take up a position away from the field. Notification DatesPlayers making one of the select teams will have their tryout number posted on the website, on or before the following dates: Girls:
Boys:
If you have not been contacted or do not see your number posted on this website by the last notification date, contact the Head Coach of the age group immediately. The coach of the team to which you were selected will call each player on the team to officially extend the offer, and the player will have up to a day or two to consider the offer and accept or decline it. This will then determine the pool of players for the next team, and that coach likewise will follow that same process. Any player not selected will be included in the Club program and a refund or credit will be made. Tracking ProcessDuring Sign-In, every player will be assigned a unique number that will be used by the coaches to record and track each player's progress. At each tryout, the number should be pinned to the shorts at the hip (this is so that their number won't be obscured if they are in a pinnie or training vest). Roll will be taken after the first day sign-in. IMPORTANT: Keep and reuse this number for each tryout - do not lose or forget this number! As rosters are submitted to the Soccer Registrar, player tryout numbers will be posted under the appropriate team on Select Program page of our website (players should also receive a phone call from the selecting coach).
